Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the largest singe work-related illness and injury problem in the United States. This course helps transit workers understand MSDs and their causes. It describes MSD risk factors in the work environment and steps employees can take to reduce their risk of injury. The course concludes with personal precautions that employees can take to improve their overall health and wellness such as proper sitting, standing, lifting, pulling and pushing techniques, stretches and exercises.

Who Should Attend

Transit operators, mechanics, bus cleaners, and administrative personnel.

Workshop Presenter

Tim Shellenberger is the Training Supervisor in the Maintenance Department for C-Tran (Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area Authority) located in Vancouver. As the Training Supervisor, Tim develops and provides specialized technical training and conducts occupational health and safety training to 50+ employees.

Tim teaches Cummins Engine classes at Clark Community College and provides training and consulting to various facilities in the Northwest. Additionally, Tim serves as an Occupational Health and Safety instructor for the National Transit Institute. In an effort to “stay in touch” with the practical skills as a mechanic, Tim also works weekends as a diesel mechanic for Raz Transportation of Portland, Oregon.

Tim graduated from Universal Technical Institute in 1984, specializing in diesel technology. Tim has been in the bus industry for 17 years as a diesel mechanic, with the last eight years as a Technical Trainer. Tim currently serves as C-Tran’s EEO Officer and is an active member of the Clark County Skills Center and Clark College Diesel Advisory Committees.

Members and Non-Members

Members are determined to be employees of transportation systems providing services to the public in Washington State and members of the partner organizations that make-up the Coalition. The partners are: Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington State Transit Association, Community Transportation Association of the Northwest, Washington State Transit Insurance Pool, and Eastern Washington University Northwest Tribal Technical Assistance Program.

Such transportation systems include any combination of services, facilities, and infrastructure related to transit, special needs transportation, ridesharing, airport shuttles, passenger rail, ferries, and taxi services. Individuals who do not work for a transportation system as defined above are considered non-members and will be charged an additional $25 per day training fee.

Location and Schedule

The class will be held at the WSTIP office, 2629 12th Court SW, in Olympia. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am and run until 4:30 pm. An hour and half lunch break will begin at 12:00. Lunch will be on your own.

Directions

From I-5, take exit 104 - the Hwy 101 exit. Take the second Hwy 101 exit, Black Lake Blvd. Turn right on Black Lake Blvd. Go through the first light. Take the first road on your right, 12th Court SW. Immediately, turn right into the parking area. The WSTIP building is on your left. Please park in spots in front of the building or anywhere on the street along 12th Court SW or Parkmont Lane SW.

Workshop Cancellation Policy

You may cancel your workshop registration without penalty, up to, November 24, 2004.

Cancellations made on or later than November 25, 2004 will be charged the full workshop fee. The TrainingCoalition may cancel the class if on November 25, 2004, fewer than 12 people are registered for the course. If the Training Coalition cancels the course, participants will receive a complete refund.
